Character Builders - The family workforce

Matthew

An experienced stone carver and mason Matt brings his skills as a sculptor to the company. Formerly apprenticed to renowned sculptor Peter Randall-Page, Matthew has worked on projects including the stone carving at the Eden Project.  He has also worked across Europe, including spending a period of time in Italy training with marble specialists. He is responsible for Health and Safety on site. Being the oldest brother he keeps a watchful eye on proceedings. He also insists that he is referred to as an ‘artist’ rather than a builder!

Tom

Tom has been managing the company since conception and is responsible for quotes and client liaison. He has a wealth of experience across the board having worked for builders in the local area for sixteen years. Tom’s main areas of skills are roofing and carpentry. Tom’s personal interests are ‘green living’ and he looks to develop that on site, in Character Builder’s work. Tom’s mantra is ‘every detail counts’.

Sam

Sam’s specialist areas are cob work and stone masonry. Sam is also in charge of managing the work force, leading and supporting the company apprentices and labourers. Sam has a good artistic eye, often adding that special touch to the building. Sam believes his strength is that he ‘works like a Viking’.

Simeon

Simeon is the youngest brother and has been part of the company for three years. Having modeled part time Sims has swapped the catwalk for the building site and specialises in lime rendering/plastering. Simeon is also in charge of the payroll. Simeon brings real energy to the site and has a strong vision of the future direction for Character Builders. When asked to sum himself up in three words Simeon said ‘sociable, supportive and direct’. He has a real appreciation of historical and traditional building with the sensitivity and skill to restore and modernise. Simeon is currently completing a part time foundation degree in Historical Building Conservation in London to back up his skill base with a more academic understanding of period properties.
